What Materials do you use?

I believe transparency is really important.  Each item includes a description of the materials that I have used, including the gemstones, metals and the stringing material. Because that is what determines the price of the piece you’re buying.

GEMSTONES: I have dedicated myself to sourcing the best quality gemstones and make every effort to source locally where possible.  I use various types of natural gemstones, including precious (emeralds, sapphires, rubies and pearls - yes, they are considered precious), semi-precious stones (pretty much everything else) and in some cases, some man-made stones. Gemstones are natural, which means they will have natural inclusions and colour variations - no two strands are alike.  Therefore, the colour of your stones will vary slightly from the photos you see online.

TREATMENT: In some cases, stones are treated to enhance their colour.  This is a standard practice in the gemstone industry and it does not mean that the stone is less valuable or synthetic.  A great example is Carnelian, which is typically a red/orange stone.  Carnelian is often heated to achieve a richer, deeper red colour.  If a stone has been treated (heated, dyed, stabilised, etc…), it will be noted.

NATURAL vs. MAN-MADE:  Most of the gemstones I use are natural.  Where I have used a man-made stone (i.e., the howlite turquoise used in the Mimi phone charm), it will be noted.  

METALS: The type of metal that is used in each piece is specified in the description.  If you have any concerns (allergies/sensitivities), please do not hesitate to contact me. Materials I use: 

18k gold over sterling silver:  These findings have a sterling silver base which has been plated with a thin layer of 18k gold (typically, 0.5 microns).  They offer a luxurious finish at a very reasonable price point.  If looked after properly, your piece will remain sparkly and new for a long time.  Please follow the care instructions included with your purchase. 

VERMEIL: Vermeil is also 18k gold plated over solid sterling silver,  BUT it has a much thicker layer than the standard gold-plated sterling silver.  For an item to be considered “vermeil”, it needs to have at least 2.5 microns of gold. This increases the cost of the item significantly, but equally, the longevity of it as well.

PVD plated over Stainless Steel:  I love using this material on some of my pieces to give you longevity and accessibility (price-wise).  This is a highly durable, corrosion-resistant and mostly hypoallergenic material created by using a vacuum coating process to bond a thin later of gold (typically 18k) to a 316L stainless steel base.  Please note that this finish has a darker, antique-like gold-finish; a little darker than typical 18k gold. 

18k gold plated over Brass or Stainless Steel:  This material is made applying a think layer of 18k gold (75% pure gold) electroplated over a base metal like brass or stainless steel.  It can fade over time with wear and if exposed to harsh materials and water.  However, if cared for properly, your jewellery can last for a long time.
